Why This Movie: The Martian
Why "The Martian" Made the Cut for Stick Figure Movie Trivia?
When selecting movies for Stick Figure Movie Trivia, we wanted titles that weren’t just entertaining but also meaningful—films that resonate beyond the screen. The Martian was an easy choice.
First off, we loved the book. Andy Weir’s mix of humor, problem-solving, and relentless optimism made it a standout read. As someone with a physics background, I also appreciated the science behind the story—though, let’s be honest, Hollywood took a few liberties. Still, the film captures the spirit of real-world space exploration beautifully.
Then there’s the acting—Matt Damon delivers an incredible performance as Mark Watney, balancing desperation with humor in a way that keeps you hooked. But what really makes The Martian special is its message of resilience. Watney never gives up, adapting and problem-solving his way through an impossible situation. And beyond his personal struggle, the film shows something even more powerful: the entire world uniting to bring him home.
In a time when we could all use a little more optimism and teamwork, The Martian is exactly the kind of film we love celebrating. That’s why it earned a spot in Stick Figure Movie Trivia.
Why This Movie: Flow
Why did we add the 2024 Animated Film “Flow” to Stick Figure Movie Trivia?
Since the first time I watched “My Neighbor Totoro,” I have been a fan of Studio Ghibli’s films, several of which are in Stick Figure Movie Trivia. These films are the pinnacle of drawn 2D animated films, in my opinion.
Flow is not a Studio Ghibli film; it isn’t 2D animation. However, the film manages to evoke the feel of a Studio Ghibli production and the sweetness of a ‘Totoro.’ What’s more, it manages this without a line of dialog. I also believe that maintaining the mystery of the disappearance of all humans aids in focusing the viewer on the drama that unfolds.
The animal characters are humorous, kind, and brave. The scenes and action are mesmerizing.
After watching this film, I had to add it to the game.
Note:
Flow is a collaborative production involving several studios:
Dream Well Studio: Founded by director Gints Zilbalodis.
Sacrebleu Productions: A French studio co-produced the film, contributing to its animation and production processes.
Take Five: A Belgian studio involved in the co-production, supporting various aspects of the film's development.
